The story of Chesley Sullenberger, an American pilot who became a hero after landing his damaged plane on the Hudson River in order to save the flight's passengers and crew.

On Thursday, January 15th, 2009, the world witnessed the "Miracle on the Hudson" when Captain Chesley Sullenberger, nicknamed "Sully" & is portrayed by Tom Hanks glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. However, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career. Written by Warner Bros.

On January 15, 2009, US Airways pilots Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles board US Airways Flight 1549 from LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Barely three minutes into the flight, at an approximate altitude of 2,800 feet (approx. 850 m), the Airbus A320 hits a flock of Canada geese, disabling both engines. Without engine power or airports within a safe distance, Teterboro Airport being the closest, Sully decides to ditch the aircraft on the Hudson River. Sully manages to land the aircraft in the Hudson without any casualties. The press and public immediately hail him as a hero, but the incident leaves him with PTSD, repeatedly envisioning the plane crashing into a building.

Afterwards, Sully learns that preliminary data reports from ACARS suggest that the left engine was still running at idle. Theoretically, this would have left him with enough power to return to LaGuardia or land at Teterboro. Furthermore, the board of inquiry claims that several confidential computerized flight simulations created from all available data conclude that the plane could have been landed safely at either airport even with both engines disabled. Sully, however, maintains that he lost both engines, which left him without sufficient time, speed, or altitude to safely land at any airport.

Sully realizes that the NTSB is angling to have the accident deemed pilot error, which would effectively end his career. In a bid to save his reputation, he arranges to have the simulator pilots available for live demonstrations at the public hearing on the accident. When both simulations land at the airport successfully, Sully counters that the simulations were unrealistic because the pilots immediately knew what actions to take, thus eliminating the human factor and not accounting for the amount of time that pilots would have needed in reality to assess their situation and attempt unsuccessfully to restart failed engines, as was the case with Sully and Skiles. When pressed, the board admits that the simulator pilots were allowed multiple practice sessions prior to the successful simulations shown at the hearing.

Conceding Sully's point, the board orders a rerun of the simulations with a 35-second pause after the bird strikes before any emergency diversions are attempted. When revised accordingly, the LaGuardia simulation ends with the flight plowing through the lead-in lights short of the runway, and the Teterboro simulation with the flight crashing into a building short of the airport.

After a short break, the board reveals that the left engine has been recovered from the Hudson River, showing indisputable signs that it was completely destroyed by the bird strikes. In light of these findings, the board officially finds that the loss of US Airways Flight 1549 was unavoidable, and that Sullenberger acted correctly in executing the only viable option available to him as the pilot in command to save the lives of all aboard. When asked if he would have done anything differently, First Officer Skiles replies: "I would have done it in July."

The end credits feature a reunion montage of the real passengers and crew of Flight 1549 at the Carolinas Aviation Museum, where the accident aircraft is on display.

An African-American man struggles to be himself over three periods of his life, trying to come out but also stay faithful.

Critical reception:

Moonlight has received universal acclaim, with critics praising the acting, direction, screenplay, cinematography, and score. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 98%, based on 46 reviews, with an average rating of 9/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Moonlight uses one man's story to offer a remarkable and brilliantly crafted look at lives too rarely seen in cinema." On Metacritic, the film holds a score of 97 out of 100, based on 18 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter positively reviewed Moonlight after its premiere at the 2016 Telluride Film Festival. He praised the performance of the cast and the cinematography of James Laxton as "fluid and seductive, deceptively mellow, and shot with shearing compassion." Rooney concluded by writing that Moonlight "will strike plangent chords for anyone who has ever struggled with identity, or to find connections in a lonely world."[13] In a unanimously positive review for Time Out New York, Joshua Rothkopf gave Moonlight a full five stars out of five, praising Barry Jenkins' direction and hailing the film as "without a doubt, the reason we go to the movies: to understand, to come closer, to ache, hopefully with another."
Brian Formo of Collider.com gave Moonlight a 'B' grade rating, applauding the performances and direction but contending that the film "is more personal and important than it is great."Similarly, Jake Cole of Slant Magazine praised the acting, but criticized the screenplay and argued that "so much of the film feels old-hat." In a review for The Verge, Tasha Robinson lamented the plot details omitted between the film's three acts, but wrote that "what does make it to the screen is unforgettable."

While discussing the film after its screening at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival, Justin Chang of the Los Angeles Times described Moonlight as "achingly romantic and uncommonly wise", opining the film to be an early Oscar contender. Chang further writes: "[Barry Jenkins] made a film that urges the viewer to look past Chiron’s outward appearance and his superficial signifiers of identity, climbing inside familiar stereotypes in order to quietly dismantle them from within... [Moonlight] doesn't say much. It says everything."

American Pastoral

American Pastoral watch full online 2016

In 1968, a hardworking man, who's been a staple in his quaint community for years, watches his seemingly perfect middle class life fall apart as his daughter's new radical political affiliation threatens to destroy their family.

American Pastoral is a Philip Roth novel published in 1997 concerning Seymour "Swede" Levov, a successful Jewish American businessman and former high school star athlete from Newark, New Jersey. Levov's happy and conventional upper middle class life is ruined by the domestic social and political turmoil of the 1960s during the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson, which in the novel is described as a manifestation of the "indigenous American berserk." The novel won the Pulitzer Prize in 1998 and was included in Time's "All-TIME 100 Greatest Novels." The film rights to it were later optioned by Paramount Pictures. In 2006, it was one of the runners-up in the "What is the Greatest Work of American Fiction in the Last 25 Years?" contest held by the New York Times Book Review.
The framing device in American Pastoral is a 45th high school reunion attended by frequent Roth alter ego Nathan Zuckerman, who is the narrator. At the reunion, in 1995, Zuckerman meets former classmate Jerry Levov who describes to him the tragic derailment of the life of his recently deceased older brother, Seymour "Swede" Levov, who succumbed to metastatic prostate cancer at age 68. After Seymour's teenage daughter Merry, in 1968, set off a bomb in protest against American involvement in the Vietnam War, killing a bystander, and subsequently went into hiding, Seymour Levov remained traumatized for the rest of his life. The rest of the novel consists of Zuckerman's posthumous recreation of Seymour Levov's life, based on Jerry's revelation, a few newspaper clippings, and Zuckerman's own impressions after two brief run-ins with "the Swede," in 1985 and shortly before Seymour's death from prostate cancer, at age 68, in 1995. In these encounters, which take place early in the novel, Zuckerman learns that Seymour has remarried and has three young sons, but Seymour's daughter Merry is never mentioned. In Zuckerman's reimagining of Seymour's life, this second marriage has no part; it ends in 1973 with Watergate unraveling on TV while the previous lives of the protagonists completely disintegrate.

Plot

Seymour Irving Levov is born and raised in the  section of Newark, New Jersey, in 1927 as the elder son of a successful Jewish American glove manufacturer, Lou Levov, and his wife Sylvia. Called "the Swede" because of his anomalous blond hair, blue eyes and Nordic good looks, Seymour is a star athlete in high school; a two-year veteran of the Marine Corps; and the narrator Nathan Zuckerman's idol and hero. Zuckerman and Seymour's younger brother, Jerry—who grows into a curmudgeonly, irascible heart surgeon with little empathy for the Swede—are schoolmates and close friends. The Swede eventually takes over his father's glove factory and marries Dawn Dwyer, a former beauty queen from nearby Elizabeth, whom he met in college.
Seymour establishes what he believes to be a perfect American life with a beloved wife and daughter, a satisfying business career, and a magnificent house in the idyllic hamlet of Old Rimrock. Yet, as the Vietnam War andracial unrest rack the country and destroy inner-city Newark, his precocious teenage daughter Meredith ("Merry"), beset by an emotionally debilitating stutter and outraged by the war, becomes grotesquely overweight and increasingly radical in her beliefs. In February 1968, Merry plants a bomb in the Old Rimrock post office, which kills a American Pastoral watch online bystander; she goes into permanent hiding. Seymour finds Merry five years later, living in deplorable conditions in inner-city Newark. During this reunion, Merry reveals that she was responsible for several more bombings, killing three more people. Though Merry informs him that her actions were deliberate, Seymour decides to keep their meeting a secret, believing Merry has been manipulated by an unknown political group and a mysterious woman named Rita Cohen.
At a dinner party, Seymour discovers that his wife Dawn has been having an affair with Princeton-educated architect William Orcutt III, for whom she undergoes a facelift. Seymour then realizes that his wife is planning to leave him for Orcutt. It is revealed that Seymour himself previously had a short-term affair with Merry's speech therapist, Sheila Salzman, and that she and her husband Shelly hid Merry in their home after the post office bombing. Seymour sadly concludes that everyone he knows may have a veneer of respectability, but each engages in subversive behavior and that he cannot understand the truth about anyone based upon the conduct they outwardly display. He is forced to see the truth about the chaos and discord rumbling beneath the "American pastoral," which has brought about profound personal and societal changes he no longer can ignore. Simultaneously, the dinner party underscores the fact that no one ever truly understands the hearts of other people.
